How to stay healthy this winter
Winter is coming....Yes, winter is well on the way and is notorious for also being the cold and flu season. You may feel determined to avoid getting sick this year and we have a few ideas to help you maintain a healthy, germ free home.
The first recommendation we can make is make sure all your linens are cleaned regularly. You may not want to hear this but you should be cleaning your bed linens at least every fortnight. You spend upwards of 3000 hours in your bed per year, that 120 days! Your bed linens are a hot spot for dust mites, dust, skin flakes, sweat, body oils and the corresponding germs and bacteria that go along with that. Maintaining a good routine of cleaning your sheets and linens regularly will not only help your sleep but it will make sure you have a clean and healthy space to catch some Z's.
Open your windows as much as possible, instinct tells us to rug up and close up when the winter chill hits but we recommend you have your doors and windows open as much as possible during this period to air out your home and prevent the build up of mould/mildew. Mould and mildew are more likely to grow in areas that see very little light and fresh air. We suggest you to keep your windows open while at work during the day to ensure adequate air flow throughout your home.
Clean your carpets! We can give you a million reasons why you should have your carpets professionally steam cleaned at least once a year but here's the best one: regular, professional steam cleaning makes for a healthier home. It's true, it does. Your carpet captures all the pollutants that come into your home, dust, dirt (brought in on foot traffic and the breeze), vehicle and traffic pollutants, mould spores, bacteria, dust mites and other germs. Your carpet acts like your home's air filter so you don't have to breath in all that dust and soil that is in your carpet fibers. This is one of the reasons why carpets are great, they're comfortable, warm, make for better sound insulation and they hold a lot of dust that would otherwise be floating around in the air ready to be pulled into your lungs. Better in the carpet than in your lungs, we say!
Like any air filter you need to give them a deep clean regularly to keep them in top operating condition and prevent them from becoming a source of harm or ill health for you and your family. Steam cleaning or cleaning using the warm water extraction method is the very best way to ensure a deep, hygienic clean to your carpets. Steam cleaning pulls all the dirt, dust, mould spores, bacteria and dust mites out of your carpet fibers, leaving you with clean, healthy carpets.
