The difference between Steamed Carpet Cleaning and Dry Carpet Cleaning

Today, when one of our Carpet Cleaning technicians was working out in Rochedale, South of Brisbane, he was asked by one of our clients, “Why do you prefer to use Steam Cleaning rather than Dry Cleaning as your preferred carpet clean”? After recently checking out a few discussion forums about carpet cleaning, I noticed that there were are lot of forums that asked similar questions. “What is the best…Steam Cleaning or Dry Cleaning?” Now, the response that came surprised me a little as most people were unsure and many other people were quoting incorrect information. So, I thought this would be a great time to write about why we have chosen to use the the Hot Water Extraction method of cleaning over dry cleaning. I thought it would also be helpful to list the advantages and disadvantages of both methods.

Now, if you are confused about what a Steam Clean is and what a Hot Water Extraction Clean is, rest assured, they are the same thing. The true term is Hot Water Extraction due to the method of hot water and a powerful suction method that is involved.

Most carpet manufacturers recommend hot water extraction as the preferred cleaning method to prolong the life of the carpet.

Advantages Of Steam Cleaning

  • A better result if carpets are heavily soiled or if there are pets on the carpet.

  • A deeper clean. A true commercial hot water extraction will remove grime and dirt from the base of the carpet.

  • No chemical residue is left on the carpet.

  • Removal of allergens and dirt that is trapped in the carpet fibers, these are particles that will remain in your carpet even after you have spent all morning vacuuming.

  • Most popular technique in cleaning carpets especially in large spaces such as offices, schools and hotels.

Disadvantages Of Steam Cleaning

  • Extended drying time if the technician has inferior cleaning equipment or is inexperienced.

  • Truck mounted Hot Water Extraction machines can do the more thorough job but they cannot be moved out of the vehicle, hence only allowing two floors of a building to be reached. We used both truck mount and powerful pull out equipment, suiting everyone’s requirements.

Advantages of Dry Cleaning

  • Carpet is dry quickly between 30 and 60 minutes.

  • Carpet can be walked on almost instantly.

  • Handy for areas that receive a lot of traffic and need a fast drying time.

Disadvantages of Dry Cleaning

  • Surface clean only

  • Chemical residue is left on the carpet

  • Stains may resurface within a few months.

As with both technicians it is important to employ qualified carpet technicians that are trained to the ACCI Standards and will guarantee all workmanship.
