Carpet Case Moth & Carpet Beetles: Destructive Pests

Carpet Case Moth - pest control

Carpet Beetles and Carpet Case Moth are relentless pests that if left unabated can cause serious damage and cost you serious money in repairs. Both the carpet beetle and carpet case moth subsist on organic fibres like wool, silk and cotton which is why these pests are a particular risk to wool carpets. Our technicians have seen the damage they can cause when left undisturbed and you'll agree, it's not pretty.

This week our technician was called out for a carpet clean and when he got there he was shocked to see that much of the carpet in one room had been consumed by carpet case moth. Once he lifted the rug he saw the extensive damage the case moth larvae were able to create. As you can see in the pictures below the case moth larvae had eaten the carpet fibres threadbare. All that is let is the base of the carpet and once our technician ran the vacuum over it, the carpet fibres eaten loose by case moth were inevitably pulled up by the vacuum cleaner, showing just how bare the case moth had left the carpet.

Damage from Carpet Beetle

This is one of the more extreme cases but it serves as a timely reminder that a carpet case moth or carpet beetle infestation will only get worse with time if left unchecked. The best thing you can do if you start to notice bald patches in your carpet is call a professional pest controller (preferably one that knows carpet!) to have the carpet treated.. Due to the nature of a carpet case moth or carpet beetle infestations, follow ups are usually required to make sure the problem has been solved.

If you have wool carpets or silk drapes, here are a few things you can do to help prevent a case moth or carpet beetle problem:

  • Vacuum regularly; making sure to reach under rugs, drapes and furniture. Case moths and carpet beetles will hide in dark areas particularly in rooms that are seldom used, so a rigorous, weekly vacuum routine will prevent these pests from settling in a single area for too long.

  • Move furniture and rugs around regularly; case moths and carpet beetles will always seek out a quiet, darkened spot to eat away in peace, disturbing these pest hot spots will deter them.

  • Keep and eye out for moth "cases". These cases will be the same colour as your carpet and strewn around in the darkened areas of your home. The case moth larvae create cocoons to pupate in and yes, you guessed right, they're using your carpet fibres to create a comfy little cocoon.

  • Call a professional Carpet Cleaner/Pest Controller to treat the the problem before it gets out of control.
