Removing Water Stains in your Carpets
We hear this horror story all the time, a client has woken up to find a large water stain on their beautiful, pristine carpet after their air conditioner has leaked water everywhere leaving a large wet patch in the carpet; or a client’s washing machine has overflowed and they haven’t realised until they’ve come across the river of water inching its’ way down the hall, saturating all the carpet in its’ wake. At that point it’s important not to panic and act quickly.
If it’s a minor water leak that has caused the carpet to become wet, stop the leak (if possible) or at least catch the water before it reaches the carpet. A well placed bucket will work wonders in this situation. If it’s a larger flood (like an overflowing bath or washing machine turn off the main power switch and then remove the plugs from the wall sockets if it is safe to do so. Then find the source of the water and stop it, if possible. Once the water has been stopped or redirected, try and mop as much as the water up off the carpet as possible. Towels can be every useful here.
You won’t be able to get all the water up out of the carpet, especially if you have had a significant amount of water flood the carpet. For this you’ll need to call Results Home Services where one of our experienced and qualified technicians will be able to extract the water out of the carpet, assess the damage and treat accordingly. Many people aren’t aware that even plain old water can cause carpets to brown and “browning” occurs because the carpet dries from the top down, so the dry top of the carpet pulls the water (and all the dirt and soil dissolved in it) to the top where there water evaporates leaving the dirt and soil at the top of the carpet. This is a common occurrence in carpets that have had excess water or moisture on them. It’s important to remember to leave the water stain once you have mopped up as much of the water as possible. Don’t try and treat the stain before our technician has had a chance to assess the damage and apply a suitable treatment that won’t damage the carpet. In the most serious cases of water damage a second clean is required after the carpets have had a couple of days to dry after the initial extraction and clean. We supply air movers in these cases to help the carpets dry as fast as possible. After the carpet is dry a second clean is usually required to treat any browning that occurs as a results of the water damage.
